But be honest about your week, not your ideal week. Autos, parking, chai, the vegetable vendor, the temple, a tip, a wedding envelope, anywhere outside a metro — these still want a note. How thin is thin, actually

"Slim" is not a regulated word — nearly every listing uses it. The number in the dimensions is the only thing that means anything. For reference, here is where common wallets land when empty:

One thing every listing leaves out: these are empty measurements. Add ten cards and a few notes and a 1 cm wallet becomes roughly 2 cm. Buy for how thin it is loaded with your stuff, not how thin it looks in the photograph.

What you give up

Going slim is a trade, and it is worth knowing what you are trading before the parcel arrives. You lose capacity — a slim wallet that holds six cards is not going to swallow the twelve you currently carry. You often lose the coin pocket, which matters less every year but still matters. And you lose space for paper: receipts, parking slips, the folded bill you meant to file.

The honest version is that a slim wallet does not compress your load, it forces you to cut it. What is the difference between a card holder and a slim wallet?

A card holder carries cards only, usually four to eight, and has no space for folded notes. A slim wallet is a normal bifold built thin, so it still takes cash in a currency compartment. If you keep any cash at all, take the slim wallet. Choose a card holder only if you genuinely never carry notes.

How thin does a wallet have to be to count as slim?

Under about 1.5 cm empty is slim, and 1 cm is genuinely thin. Once a wallet is 2.5 cm empty it is a back-pocket wallet no matter what the listing calls it. Always check the thickness figure rather than the word slim in the title, because the word is unregulated and most listings use it.

Is a card holder enough now that most payments are UPI?

For city life, often yes. If your spending is nearly all UPI and you only need a debit card, a licence and an office ID, a card holder covers it.
