Dress codes, decoded.

"Smart casual" isn't the same in Mumbai as it is in London. Indo-western has rules. Here's what each code actually means for an Indian man — and what to wear when the invite is vague.

Smart casual

A collared shirt or polo + chinos or smart trousers + leather sneakers or loafers. Belt optional. No tie. No jeans (in most settings). Untuckable shirt length so you can go tucked or not.

Wear: A light-blue oxford shirt with stone chinos and brown loafers. Or a navy polo with charcoal trousers and white leather sneakers.

Don't: Slogan tees, ripped jeans, flip-flops, sportswear sneakers (the Yeezys stay home), hoodies.

Business formal

Suit + dress shirt + leather lace-up + understated tie. Charcoal, navy, or mid-grey suit — never black, except for funerals. White or light-blue shirt. Belt matches the shoes (both brown, or both black, never mixed).

Wear: A navy two-piece, white shirt, burgundy knit tie, brown brogues, brown belt, silver watch.

Don't: Brown suits with black shoes, novelty ties, square-toe shoes, white socks.

Business casual

Blazer or knit + dress shirt + chinos or wool trousers + leather shoes. Tie optional, usually skipped. The blazer is the "lift" — without it, you've slipped into smart casual.

Wear: Navy unstructured blazer, white shirt, charcoal trousers, brown derbies. Or a mid-grey knit polo with cream trousers and tan loafers.

Indo-western

The term has spread from wedding cards to office party invites. Loosely: an Indian top with western tailoring, or a western top with Indian bottoms. The two halves must talk to each other.

Wear: A short bandhgala jacket over a white shirt with tailored trousers and brogues. Or a long Nehru-collar kurta with churidar and oxfords. Or a Sadri waistcoat over a plain dress shirt with chinos.

Don't: Sherwani at a daytime brunch (overdressed). Embellished kurta with sneakers (mismatched register). Bright red shirts with metallic stoles.

Wedding-specific: sangeet, haldi, reception

Sangeet — colours allowed and welcomed. A jewel-toned bandhgala or kurta with a contrasting stole. Stay sharper than the dance floor.

Haldi — yellow, ivory, mint, pastel. Light fabrics that survive turmeric splashes and heat. A simple cotton kurta in pale yellow is the safest play.

Reception — the formal end. A dark suit, or a tailored bandhgala in navy or wine. Polished shoes. Pocket square in a contrasting silk.

"Casual" — the trickiest one

In India, "casual" rarely means actual casual. It usually means smart-casual minus the polish — a crewneck tee or polo, chinos or dark denim, clean sneakers. A linen shirt half-tucked also works.

Read the room: brunch in Bandra is more casual than brunch at the Taj. When in doubt, dial it up one notch. You can't be punished for looking sharper.

What do I wear when no dress code is given?

Default to business casual unless you have direct intel. It's the one register that's never wrong — too sharp for a casual setting won't get you turned away; too casual at a sharp setting will.

Dress code questions, answered.

What does smart casual mean for Indian men?
A collared shirt or polo with chinos or smart trousers and leather sneakers or loafers — belt optional, no tie, no jeans in most settings. Think a light-blue oxford with stone chinos and brown loafers, or a navy polo with charcoal trousers and white sneakers. Avoid slogan tees, ripped jeans, flip-flops and sportswear.
What should an Indian man wear to a sangeet, haldi or reception?
Sangeet: colour is welcome — a jewel-toned bandhgala or kurta with a contrasting stole. Haldi: light fabrics in yellow, ivory, mint or pastel that survive turmeric and heat — a pale cotton kurta is safest. Reception: go formal with a dark suit or a tailored navy or wine bandhgala and polished shoes.
What is indo-western dressing?
It pairs an Indian top with western tailoring, or a western top with Indian bottoms — the two halves must coordinate. Examples: a short bandhgala over a white shirt with tailored trousers and brogues, a Nehru-collar kurta with churidar and oxfords, or a Sadri waistcoat over a dress shirt with chinos.
