Why this prompt reads as 1985

A retro filter recolours a modern picture. This prompt builds one that could only have been taken in the mid-80s, in three layers: the place, the clothes and the print. The reference above, made with an AI prompt, shows all three. India TV's round-up of seven trend looks sticks to studio, album, wedding, college, street and magazine setups; none is a hill road.

The road. The prompt asks for misty hills, pine trees, stone roadside barriers, distant valleys, and an old hill-station atmosphere, with only period-correct environmental details. In the example that becomes weathered, whitewashed stone barriers, pines, misty ridges and a hill town in the valley. The negative line removes what would break the year here: modern vehicles, contemporary signage and recent architecture.

The clothes. The prompt never says what you are wearing. It asks for a stylish mid-1980s outfit appropriate to the person in the uploaded photo and gives a list. For the young woman in the example, that became a cream floral-print saree with a maroon border and a maroon blouse, bangles, gold earrings and a small dark-brown leather handbag. For a man, the prompt's own list is plain: high-waisted trousers, patterned shirts, denim or lightweight jackets and knitwear, with an analog watch, vintage sunglasses, a belt, a shoulder bag or classic footwear. The print. Much of the prompt describes the photograph, not the person, from 35mm grain to slightly aged printed-photo texture. In the example it shows as faded film colour and worn corners, stamped APR 14 1985. If your result looks like a modern photo with a tint, move the film sentence up to sit right after the scene sentence, and add visible film grain across the whole frame. The pose line, relaxed and spontaneous, as if photographed during a family holiday, keeps you from standing like a model. The last sentence names the goal: not a modern portrait with a retro filter.

5. Check three things. Before you post, check that the face is still yours and still your age, that nothing modern has crept onto the road, and that the date stamp reads cleanly. If one fails, fix that line and regenerate in a fresh chat.

Three ways this goes wrong

The date stamp is vague or garbled. The prompt asks only for a subtle red-orange 1985 date stamp in the lower corner, so the tool invents the day, the month and the layout, and AI image tools have a well-known habit of garbling text they are left to invent. The example carries an exact stamp, APR 14 1985; naming the exact date gives the model a string to copy. Steel crash barriers replace the stone ones. Stone roadside barriers is three words in a long list, and AI image tools have a well-known habit of falling back on the most familiar version of a scene: for a mountain road today, a metal guardrail and white lane markings. Add after the scene sentence: Line the road edge with low, weathered, whitewashed stone barriers, not metal crash barriers. No painted lane markings, road signs or traffic.

The mist lands on your face. Misty hills, lens haze, slight softness and faded colours all push the picture softer, and softness asked for everywhere can blur the features that make the face yours. Making it yours

• A men's version. The prompt adapts to a man's photo on its own.
