Black and white portrait AI prompt
The monochrome editorial portrait — hard light raking across a concrete wall, an open black shirt, deep shadows and a calm look off-frame. Copy the free ChatGPT & Gemini prompt below and keep your own face.
Black and white is not a filter here. Removing colour from a flatly lit photo gives you a flat grey photo. This prompt works because it relights the scene — one hard light from the side, a rough wall to catch it, and a black shirt that falls into shadow.
The dials people expect here do not exist: ChatGPT, Gemini and Nano Banana offer no transformation strength, no identity strength and no beautify toggle. Type the instruction instead — keep my exact face, relight me in hard monochrome, do not restyle my features. Where a tool genuinely does show a denoise or strength slider, keep it low, 0.20–0.35. Any beautify that hurt you was applied by the camera or gallery app long before the photo reached the model.
About this prompt
This is the only monochrome prompt on the site, and black and white changes the rules more than people expect. In colour, a mediocre photo can still be carried by a nice palette — a warm sunset, a red wall, a good outfit. Strip the colour out and none of that exists. All that is left is tone: how light or dark each part of the frame is. If everything lands in the middle greys, there is nothing to look at, and no amount of grain or contrast slider fixes it afterwards.
So the lighting line is doing almost all the work here. Hard directional light from the upper left means one small, undiffused source — the opposite of the soft wraparound light most portrait prompts ask for. Hard light carves shape: a bright edge down one side of the nose, a defined jaw, and a shadow that falls away into genuine black. That separation is the photograph.
Two supporting choices matter as much. The textured concrete wall is there because in monochrome, texture becomes the only surface detail left — a smooth studio backdrop reads as empty grey, while rough concrete catches raking light and gives the frame something to hold. And the black shirt drops the whole body into shadow, which leaves the face as the brightest thing in the picture. That is not a styling accident; it is how the eye gets pointed at your face.
How to use it
- Tap Copy prompt above.
- Open ChatGPT (image generation), Google Gemini or Nano Banana in image-to-image / reference mode.
- Paste the prompt and attach one sharp, clear, front-facing photo of your face.
- Write the identity lock into the prompt. There is no strength or beautify control in ChatGPT, Gemini or Nano Banana; keep my exact face, relight me, do not restyle my features does the same job. Image-to-image apps that do show a denoise or strength slider work best low, around 0.20–0.35.
- Generate at a vertical ratio — 4:5 or 2:3, 1080 px wide or larger.
If it comes out flat
This is the failure that matters, and it is almost always the same one: the image is grey rather than black and white. Everything sits in the middle of the range, the shadows are soft, and it looks like a colour photo with the saturation pulled down — because that is effectively what the model produced.
The fix is to push the lighting language, not the monochrome language. Ask for hard, undiffused, directional light from one side, say the shadow side should go genuinely dark rather than grey, and ask for strong chiaroscuro contrast. Saying "more black and white" does nothing; saying "harder light and deeper shadows" does everything.
It also helps to feed it a reference photo that already has some directional light in it. A flat, evenly lit selfie gives the model no shape to build on, and it will tend to keep that flatness.
Making it yours
- The black shirt is structural, not decorative. If you swap it, keep it plain and dark — a pattern turns into visual noise in monochrome, and a light top steals attention from your face.
- Light from the right? Change "upper left" to "upper right" and change the head turn to off-frame right, so he is looking into the light rather than away from it.
- Keep the rolled sleeves. Forearms give the frame a second area of skin tone, which stops the lower half becoming one solid black shape.
- If your hair is short or straight, edit "dark wavy hair" to describe your own — the prompt should follow your head, not the reference's.
- The "no full beard" line is there because models love to add one to a moody male portrait. Delete it if you have a beard and want it kept.
If the dramatic, low-key look is what you are after, the glowing cinematic portrait lights from behind instead of the side, the red cinematic studio portrait does it in colour, and the moody restaurant portrait puts the same shallow depth of field in a real location.
